The Big Cheese of the Lake Tanganyikan Cichlids, the Frontosa has a relatively peaceful nature. Native to the Northern half of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, there are quite a few natural occurring morphs of this fish dependent upon the location in the lake. The Black Widow Frontosa is a selectively bred variation highlighted by a randomly distributed set of darker blue markings on a lighter blue almost white background. This is a predatory fish that grows to quite a significant size. (Up to 14"), so smaller tankmates are always at risk. Males are characterized by a large hump on the forehead. As with other Tanganyikan cichlids this fish prefers much harder water with much higher PH numbers although they are tolerant of a wide range of water parameters. Also prefers a rocky environment with sandy bottoms similar to the aquascapes native to the Rift Lakes. Not particularly hard to take care of, a larger aquarium is a necessity.
